Barovia by coyotemax Barovia by coyotemax
A Map done in the antique style (specifically Joan Blaeu and family) for Barovia.

Call me a purist, but I prefer the original Ravenloft setting, I'd purchased the boxed set the day it hit shelves (may have actually been before, I was friends with the owner of the gaming store, heh). I'd stopped playing long before WOTC took things over, so if there are any revisionists out there who wonder why this doesn't look anything at all like whatever map is currently being touted (if any), that's why.

Created partly for my own sense of nostalgia, partly for my wife who's been encouraging me to do more maps in this style, and partly for mearrin69 from cartographersguild.com who mentioned he could use a map like this for his new campaign :)

well as far as minimalist, that's the style of the artist I was trying to emulate.  And as for the differences, remember this is pre-WOTC, so it's original boxed-set layout :)  (and dang, you know how long it took me to find a pre-wotc map online to use for reference?)

It's a nice map, maybe a bit minimalist. Not too far off from the current official version, it's obviously still supposed to be the same place. The primary differences I spotted are 1) no Lake Zarovich 2) no Forlorn anywhere 3) former Gundarak territory moved from the west to south 4) Sanguinia replacing the Shadow Rift. I actually don't like The Shadow Rift and think that Sanguinia is a fine replacement as a northern neighbor but am to wedded to canon to do anything like that myself.

I've always loved Ravenloft and Barovia.

I keep looking at this thinking maybe it's time to redo it now that my skills have improved :D

Looks quite desolate and uninhabited for huge stretches of wilderness between the small towns, which would work very well for a setting like Ravenloft.  Makes traveling from one town to the next quite a dangerous undertaking with days spent far away from civilization and (comparative) safety, where who knows what lurks out there.  Seems like you could easily get lost if you venture away from the rivers.

I love it! Great old style look. Would work perfectly as a player handout. Good work.

Thanks!
I'm actually seriously thinking of redoing now that I've refined my technique more, and have a tablet :)

That style is just awesome. This overall handdrawn feeling and especially the mountains are really beautiful! :)

Ah-ha! Well, you're very good at the watercolor technique. Very well done. Inspiring. I'd say stick away from the tablet if you're this good with a mouse. XP
